Visited El Meson de la Costa today. Had been recommended the place, but after our experience felt compelled to inform others. The location and restaurant look really nice and upon entering we thought/hoped we would have a nice Sunday lunch on a Carneval day in Torrevieja. Ok, the economy is not so good and maybe there’s a temptation to think that foreigners are stupid and they come only once to the restaurant. I’m sure everyone agrees that’s the wrong approach. The waiters are courteous, but realized upon listening to other guests that they recommend certain things. We didn’t agree on the recommendation on the first course and ordered something else. My husband ordered seafood soup, which was passable. I ordered fried small fish which they could not fulfill and suggested other things, which were tasty, yet somewhat expensive for a first course. But our real complaint is the main course. Unfortunately we followed the waiter’s recommendation. Ordered leg of lamb for two done in the oven. Have had that in other places so knew what to expect. Were presented with four/five hacked pieces (mostly of bone) of very dry lamb on a bed of potatoes. Almost inedible and when complaining all very courteous waiters kind of disappeared. Maybe we just made the wrong choice or one should not listen to the recommendations, as it may be a way to get rid of old left-overs to foreigners who are too polite to complain. The house red wine was grand reserva 1998 Rioja. Sounds good, but in reality it was of brownish colour with a lot of sediment and propably a way of off-loading wine that was getting too old to sell at it’s appropriate price (charged 17 Euros for house wine). All in all, feel like we were ripped off in a situation that should have been a very enjoyable experience. They had few customers when other places nearby were bursting. That’s our experience and we will make sure that we will inform as many Scandinavians as we know of this. We appreciate good Spanish food and are willing to pay for it.
