El Faro Restaurant Calpe – From the Owners:
Our opening times are from 12pm to 6pm but we often stay open longer as we never like to ask visitors to leave before they have finished eating or drinking.
We have a planned menu but are very versatile and are always prepared to offer something else if our customers request it. Special meals can be catered for after a day´s notice, such as for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
On the first Sunday of every month we cook a traditional Sunday roast with all the trimmings, bookings necessary.
Our Tapas Evenings have proved very popular and again bookings are necessary.
The bar was designed by Ricardo Bofill and is tucked away on the Manzanera Urbanisation but well worth the walk to find it and you can always be assured of a friendly welcome from Ian and Brigitte who have been there now for 10 years.
Over this past decade they have built up a solid clientele of locals and visitors who can back year after year.

You want to eat tapas at lunchtime? I know of no better place than El Faro. I discovered this bar/restaurant eighteen months ago and have been a customer ever since. Never once have I been disappointed. Apart from the excellence of the food, the situation makes it a haven away from the madding crowd and the noise of traffic. Virtually on the outskirts of Calpe town even parking your car is not too difficult.
In good weather you can sit outside in a pleasantly shaded area surrounded by flower beds and breathe in fresh air rather than the fumes of passing vehicles. When the climate chases us inside, you will be warm and cosy. The interior is not large but despite there being no lack of customers, you do not feel overcrowded. It´s more like being part of a family gathering. This sensation is enhanced by the owners, Brigitte and Ian, who are two of the nicest people I have met. Add to this their high rate of efficiency, first class service, an obvious love of their work – and they are fun. What more could you ask!
Now, to the Tapas. Ian has a different way of producing these from most bars. You know, where batches are made up and placed under a glass cover waiting to catch the customer´s eye. I´m not decrying this food but it does tend to be the “same old”, “same old”. No Ian cooks for you. This is why it is advisable to call him beforehand, or drop in, to give him some idea as to what you would like to eat. If you haven’t a clue, he will always suggest a few things you may fancy. Personally, I cannot resist his little pastry tartlets filled with mushrooms in a sauce of his own invention. The fried cheese, either Camembert or goat´s, stuffed with beetroot is delicious. Then there´s loin of pork, cut into the thinnest of slices and topped with a mixture of apple and mint.
Of course, you are not obliged to eat tapas. Ian is very adaptable. However, if you want something more substantial than a sandwich, the same rules apply. Give him fair warning. Remember – he likes to cook for you. None of this whip it out of the freezer and slap it in the microwave. Hey! Why am I telling you this, go there and see for your selves.
Just one thing. If I´ve made a booking don´t you dare sit in my chair, Ian or Brigitte will tell you which it is.
Hope to see you in El Faro in Calpe – soon!
Sunday lunch is a once a month must! Try it once and you`ll be joining the rest of us every time. Otherwise the fish and chips are great, but make sure you are really hungry before you order this dish. And Jean`s right about the tapas, where else can you find them made to order and fresh?
